Guide

Find a copied screenshot by the text inside it

Hotstash reads the text inside every image you copy, on your Mac with Apple's built-in text recognition. Later, open Hotstash with ⌘⇧V and type any word that was in the screenshot. The image shows up in the results, ready to paste again.

Get Hotstash for Mac and iPhone

Launch offer: $4.99 instead of $9.99 until 1 January 2027.

How to use it

  1. Take a screenshot to the clipboard with ⌘⌃⇧4, or copy any image.
  2. Later, press ⌘⇧V and type a word you remember from it, like an invoice number or an error message.
  3. Press Return to copy it back, or drag it straight into a document.

Text recognition runs on your device. Images and their text sync to your iPhone with the rest of your history, so you can search there too.

On iPhone: copy text from paper

The Hotstash iPhone app can also scan text with the camera, like a Wi-Fi password on a card or a number on a receipt, and save it to your history, where it appears on your Mac a moment later.

Questions

Can I search my clipboard for text inside images?

Yes, with Hotstash. It recognises text in copied images on your device and includes it in search.

Does the text recognition upload my screenshots?

No. It uses Apple's on-device Vision framework. Images only sync through your own iCloud.

Hotstash is an independent app. Other product names belong to their owners and are used only to compare features.
